Professor Sadashiv A. Dange needs no introductin; he is very well known in the field of indology in general, and Vedic Studies in particular. Vol.I comprising thirty hymns of the Rgveda, has been prepared with the idea of presenting to the readers and the scholoars fresh material with a new approach. Text of every verse is reproduced in sanskirt and is then translated in English, with important words mentioned in Sanskrit in brackets, for ready verificatin. Each verse has notes be low it; and for clarification of ritual and comparative mythical ideas, each hymn carries comments at the end. For more critical readers, grammatical notes, with mention of the aphorism of Panini, have been given. As a step ahead of the translation and annotation of the Rgveda or of some hymns, it stresses on the rudiments of myths and rituals as reflected in the Rgveda, with hints of their development in the later literature, Not limiting the study to the Avestan and the usual Greek comparative sources, this stydy compares also details from the ancient Egyptian and Assyrio-Babylonian contexts; in some cases also taking a note of the Aztex source. Some of the motifs found in the Rgveda, common with other peoples, and widely observed, are the separation of the parents' (heaven and Earth); this is observed as a common and a very widely distributed myth, and forms part of the exploit of major Vedic gods; another such myth is about the cooking of the dog's entrails by Vam adeva, which has parallels in the later Indian literature, Such, and other accounts, of similar texture, had been understood as mere myths or even meaningless descriptions. However, comparative study shows that they have a mythoritualist basis The famous hymn regarding the frogs has been freshly studies with fresh tribal anthropological evidence. The well known hymnns of creation have been studies together with evidence, not only from the Atharvaveda but also from other ancient sources to see how similar concepts prevailed, in an effort to unravel the mystery of creaton. The riddle of Daksa being the son and also the creator of Aditi, as also the same motif in a seemingly awkward relaton ship between Purusa and Viraja has been tackled on the basis of folk lore evidence. ?Thus, the volume will be useful to critical students as also to lay readers, as it unfolds vedic imagery in a proper perspective.
