The early Jaina inscriptins from Rajasthan (upto 1200AD) offer some glimpses into the political and cultural history of this period. Barli Fragmentary Stone inscription belonging perhaps to the fourth or fifth century B.C. is the erliest Jaina inscriptin reported from Rajasthan. In All, the study has 52 inscriptins and most of them come from eleventh and twelfth centuries. The inscriptions are written mostly in the ANagari characters and the language used is generally Sanskrit.
Inscriptions shed light on the political history of nine dynasties and their rulers; Sunga king Bhagavata Pratiharas of Mandor; Guhilots of Mewar; Rashtrakutas of Hastikundi; Adhiraja Vijaya of Byana; Paramaras of Vagad; Chahamanas of Naddula; Chahamanas of Sakambhari; Chahamanas of Jalor. Tjhe inscriptions provide some scattered information about the administrative systme of the period under stydy: names of administrative officers and some sketchy reference to administrative institutins of the time. The inscriptins contain caste- names of some families, example of anuloma marriage and several instances of polygamy; the names of some festivals also occur. The inscriptins also mention some terms of ecnomic significance and provide information on conage and mensuration of time. Many Jaina samghas and gachchhas, Jaina preceptors and mythological exploits of the Jaina pontiffs find a place in these inscriptions, etc.
